- THE INDIAN MARRIAGE |

| A

It
is the happiest day in a parent's
life when his/her daughter is engaged
to be married. It marks the beginning
of a phase whereby parents slowly
but steadily start preparing themselves
of the fact that their daughter
is no longer theirs. It brings with
it the joy of knowing that his or
her daughter is going to begin a
new phase of her life with someone
else. However, this happiness is
accompanied with a lot of worries
and responsibilities; the responsibility
to arrange a beautiful and wonderful
wedding for their daughter that
celebrates the most important day
of her life.
These were some of the feelings
that my parents went through when
my sister got engaged one fine day
in December. Along with that celebration
came the added responsibility to
fix up a marriage date, venue, caterers,
functions, gifts, and what not.
You know, the scariest thing about
arranging a wedding is the actual
thought of having to arrange it.
Not if you are a Tata or Birla or
an Ambani, but for the rest, marriage
has to be a good combination of
lively events & functions, good
food, good service, lots and lots
of fun and excitement, and a eye
warming wedding ceremony, all this
within a reasonable spending limit.

What I want to tell you about, is how
with the help of my cousins, I managed
to put together a wonderful and exciting
wedding for my sister, and still managing
to keep the cost at a reasonable level.
Although I will admit that the word "reasonable"
could vary significantly from family to
family.
I believe there is no substitute for experience
when it comes to any aspect of life and
marriage planning is no different. Ironically,
that column on my resume had a BIG ZERO
in it. But what I lacked in experience
I made up for with my enthusiasm and managing
ability. And the lack of experience was
filled in by my cousins and family members
who ably helped me out in making my sisters
wedding a big success.
Through this column each week I hope to
touch my experience with what went on
in my head and at my house while planning
each aspect of the entire wedding. I will
try to cover topics ranging from the Marriage
Dates, Venue, Caterers, Sangeet function,
Sangeet performers, Bethak nights, Menu's
for Bethak nights, Marriage Day preparations,
post marriage wrapping up, and plenty
more in between.
During this time, I will even ask some
of my cousins and my sister (the lady
who all the hoopla was for) to fill in
the columns with their own experiences
about items, which I wouldn't DARE to
pretend to know about or write about.
It is quite possible that our views would
be very different from yours. In fact,
different views are what we all are looking
for and so please share your own experience
and help others benefit from it. Also,
if at any point of time, you have any
questions or need clarifications, please
feel free to contact our team and we will
do our best to help you out or to rectify
our errors.
I hope to see you around every week. Hope
I can be of some help in assisting you
in arranging a memorable and delightful
wedding for your loved one.
